From humble beginnings in 2003, WordPress has grown to become the most popular Content Management System (CMS) in the world. WordPress is used on millions of sites and seen by tens of millions of people every day.
WordPress is an Open Source project, which means there are hundreds if not thousands of people all over the world actively working on improving, extending and developing it. This also means that it is free for you to use without paying anyone a license fee.
What Can WordPress be Used For ?
Although WordPress was originally just a blogging system, it has evolved to become a fully featured content management system and with the thousands of plugins, widgets, and themes available (many for the for free), there is very little that WordPress can’t do.
WordPress.com vs WordPress.org
There is often some confusion between the two different websites WordPress.com and WordPress.org.
Both are based around the WordPress CMS, however WordPress.com offers a free hosting environment and places some restrictions on the features and functionality that you can use within WordPress, whereas WordPress.org is the place where you can download the WordPress software (for free) for use on your own hosting environment.
